Repair or Replace Your Dishwasher: Signs It’s Time for a New One

Repair or Replace Dishwasher? A technician comes to your home and finds the cause.

The repair or replace dishwasher decision comes down to three questions: what failed, how old is the machine and how is the rest of it holding up. Not every dishwasher problem means a new machine, and not every repair is worth doing.

Faults that are usually worth repairing

These are common, well-understood parts that can be replaced without touching the rest of the machine:

  • Door latch or latch switch
  • Water inlet valve
  • Drain pump or a blocked pump housing
  • Heating element, thermostat or thermal fuse
  • Door gasket, spray arms, rack wheels and filters
  • Detergent dispenser release

In a machine under about ten years old with a stainless or sound plastic tub, these are normally repair cases. A single failed part in an otherwise healthy machine is the strongest argument for repair.

Signs the machine is near the end

  • A rusted or cracked tub. Rust spots that keep coming back, or a cracked inner tub, mean the structure is failing. The tub is the machine.
  • Leaks from the tub itself, not the door or hoses.
  • A failing pump and motor assembly together with other faults. When more than one major part is failing, the repair bill adds up.
  • Control board failure on an older model. Boards are among the more costly parts, and an older machine’s other parts are likely close behind.
  • Repeat repairs. If you have fixed the same machine more than once in a short time, the next failure is probably close.

A rule of thumb for repair or replace dishwasher decisions

The age of the machine and the cost of the repair matter together. For a repair or replace dishwasher decision, a rule many technicians use is that when the repair costs around half the price of a comparable new machine, replacement deserves a hard look. It is a guide, not a law. A modest repair on a good machine makes sense at almost any age. A big repair on an old machine with other issues usually does not. We do not quote prices in articles, but we will tell you the repair cost after the visit, so you can compare it with what a replacement would cost you.

What you give up by keeping an old machine

Newer models generally use less water and energy and run more quietly. They also have better filtration, so the noise and the hand-rinsing habit often go away. These gains are real but modest. Do not replace a working machine only for them, and do not let them tip a repair or replace dishwasher decision that is otherwise close.

Check before you decide

  1. Find the model and serial number, usually on the door edge or the inside of the tub. The serial often shows the build date.
  2. Note what the machine is doing, and when it started.
  3. Check for a clogged filter or spray arm, a jammed latch or a blocked drain, since these can look like major faults. Our troubleshooting guide covers them, and KitchenAid’s help page on cleaning the dishwasher interior shows the filter check.
  4. Ask for a visit before deciding. A visit tells you what actually failed, not what you suspect, which is the missing fact in most repair or replace dishwasher questions.

If you replace

Measure the opening, check the shutoff valve and make sure power is available. Our dishwasher installation guide lists what to check. A new machine that is slightly different in size or connection can turn a simple swap into a longer job.

When to stop using it now

Switch off the machine and call if you see scorching or smell burning, if water is escaping near the control panel, or if the breaker trips repeatedly. Do not keep running a unit with a leak, since water damage to cabinets and floors costs more than the dishwasher.

Common questions

How long does a dishwasher usually last?

Many last roughly ten years or more, depending on use, water quality and care. There is no exact number, and a well-kept machine can go longer.

Is a control board failure the end of a dishwasher?

Not always. A board is a larger repair, so the machine's age and condition decide. A newer machine is usually worth it, and an older one often is not.

Should I replace a dishwasher that leaks?

It depends on where. A leaking door seal or hose is a minor repair. A leak through the tub itself usually means replacement.

Will a new dishwasher fit my old opening?

Most standard 24-inch models do, but check height and depth and the connections first.
