Refrigerator Runs Constantly: What to Check

Refrigerator running constantly: hand feeling the warm back of a fridge in a home kitchen
Refrigerator Running Constantly? A technician comes to your home and finds the cause.

A refrigerator running constantly is not automatically broken, because modern refrigerators are built to run for long stretches. What matters is whether it ever cycles off, how warm the food is, and whether anything has changed recently. Start by working out which situation you are in.

When a refrigerator running constantly is normal

  • A newly delivered or newly plugged-in fridge can run for many hours, sometimes up to a day, while it reaches temperature.
  • After you load a lot of warm groceries, or on a hot afternoon, expect longer run times.
  • Fridges with variable-speed compressors run at low speed for most of the day. They sound like they are always on, but quietly.
  • After a power outage, it will run until it catches up.

If the food is cold and the fridge does shut off for stretches, it is probably fine. If it hasn’t shut off for a whole day, the room is not unusually hot, and the back or sides feel very warm, work through the checks below.

Check in this order

1. Door gaskets and door position

Close the door on a strip of paper. If it pulls out easily, warm air is leaking in and the compressor never gets a break. Wipe the seals clean first, since sticky residue stops them seating. Also check that the door is fully closed and that nothing in the shelves is holding it open.

2. Dirty condenser coils

On an older unit this is the most common cause of a refrigerator running constantly. With the fridge unplugged, clean the coils with a brush and vacuum. We describe the steps in refrigerator maintenance. Let the fridge run for a day afterward and see if it begins to cycle.

3. Room temperature and clearance

A fridge in a hot garage, next to the oven or the dishwasher, or pressed against a wall will run longer. Move it if you can, or at least leave air space on the sides and back.

4. Thermostat setting

If the fridge is set to 33°F and the freezer to -5°F, it will run most of the time to hold those numbers. Set to 37°F and 0°F. Settings that are colder than needed are an easy way to end up with a refrigerator running constantly, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Guide to Kitchen Appliances has general energy-saving advice for refrigerators.

5. Overloading and blocked vents

Move items away from the vents. Do not store food against the back wall of the fridge compartment.

6. Frost on the freezer back wall

A layer of frost on the back panel suggests a defrost fault. The frost insulates the evaporator and the fridge runs and runs without cooling well. Details are in freezer not freezing and icing up.

Listen to the fans

Two fans are worth a listen if you have a refrigerator running constantly. With the fridge on, listen at the back. A condenser fan that is stuck or noisy means heat is not leaving the system. An evaporator fan that has stopped means the cold never gets to the fridge side. Squealing, grinding or a rapid clicking are worth noting; our appliance noise guide helps match sounds to causes.

When a refrigerator running constantly means something is failing

  • Weak compressor or sealed-system problem. The fridge runs forever and the food slowly warms. Sealed-system work is for technicians.
  • Bad temperature sensor or control board. The fridge may think it is warm when it is not, or ignore the thermostat.
  • Failing fan motor. Common on fridges that are several years old.

A refrigerator running constantly because of one of these faults needs a diagnosis; guessing at parts is expensive. The main cost drivers are the age of the fridge, how hard the part is to reach, and whether the sealed system is involved.

Stop and call if

  • The compressor or the back of the fridge is too hot to keep your hand on.
  • You smell something burning.
  • The food is warm even though the fridge has been running non-stop.
  • The electricity bill has climbed noticeably and nothing else in the house changed.

Never bypass a thermostat or a defrost safety to force the fridge to cool. And if you need to move the fridge to clean it, unplug it first.

Our refrigerator repair page has more on what we service, and refrigerator not cooling is the right article if the food is already warm.

If you would rather have it looked at, book at /book/ or call (916) 582-7791 and ask for the next available window. The service call is $80, paid at your home or with PayPal or a credit card.

Common questions

How long should a refrigerator run?

It varies by model and the room's temperature. Many run for a good share of the day, and that is normal. A fridge that never shuts off for a full day with warm food is not.

Is it normal for a new fridge to run all day?

For the first day or so, yes, while it cools down to temperature. If it is still running non-stop after a couple of days, check the seals and clearance.

Can dirty coils make the fridge run constantly?

Yes. Dust on the coils holds heat in, so the compressor runs longer. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Is a constantly running fridge dangerous?

Not usually, but a very hot compressor, a burning smell or warm food is a sign to unplug and call.
