Ice Maker Not Working: Checks and Fixes

An ice maker not working is often a problem outside the ice maker itself: a freezer that is not cold enough, a water line that is restricted, or an old filter. Check those first. If they are fine, the fault is in the water valve or the ice maker module, and those are repairs rather than adjustments.
Step 1: Make sure the freezer is cold enough
An ice maker needs the freezer at about 0°F. Warmer than 10°F or so and it makes slow, soft, or no ice, so a warm freezer is a common reason for an ice maker not working. If the freezer is soft in general, work on that first with freezer not freezing.
Step 2: Check the on/off position
Many ice makers have a wire arm or a switch. When the arm is raised, it is off. Lower it. On other models the control panel has an ice maker on/off setting. Check it was not turned off when someone cleaned or moved things.
Step 3: Water supply
- Check that the valve on the water supply line is fully open.
- Look behind the fridge for a kinked line. A fridge that has been pushed back hard against the wall can pinch it.
- Run the dispenser, if there is one. A weak stream or slow fill suggests a restricted line, a clogged filter or a failing inlet valve.
Water pressure matters too. Most ice maker systems need household pressure in the range the manufacturer lists. Low pressure from a partly closed valve is a common cause of small, hollow cubes.
Step 4: Replace the filter if it is old
A filter beyond its change interval can cut the flow to the ice maker much more than to the dispenser. Replace it with the correct model, seat it fully, and flush it as the instructions say. The dispenser will often behave normally and the ice maker will still starve.
Step 5: Check the fill tube
The fill tube carries water from the valve into the ice mold. If the freezer door is opened often or the tube is a little cold, it can freeze solid, so no water gets in. Look for ice around the tube at the back of the ice maker. Unplug the fridge, let the ice melt (a hairdryer on low, held away from plastic, can help), and then see whether it freezes again. A frozen fill tube is a frequent reason for an ice maker not working. If it freezes again, the heater in the tube may be failing, or the freezer temperature is erratic.
Step 6: Look for a jam
- Cubes frozen together in a clump: empty the bin, break up the clump, and discard it.
- A cube stuck in the ejector: remove it. Do not use a sharp tool.
- A full bin: the sensor arm or optical sensor stops the machine when the bin is full. Check the bin is seated and the arm is not wedged.
Reset or test cycle for an ice maker not working
Many ice makers have a test button or reset procedure that forces a cycle. The method varies by brand, so look at the manual or the model sticker. The mold should heat, the arm should sweep and the valve should fill the mold. If the cycle starts but no water enters, the valve or line is the suspect. If the ice maker does nothing, the module or its thermostat may have failed.
What a technician looks at
- The water inlet valve, which clogs with sediment or stops opening.
- The ice maker module and its thermostat or heater.
- The fill tube heater on models that have one.
- Refrigerator control or temperature sensor faults.
For an ice maker not working after the checks above, the cost depends on which part, how easy it is to reach and the age of the fridge, so a diagnosis before parts is the sensible order. We cover this on our ice maker repair page.
Stop and call if
Call about an ice maker not working if any of these apply:
- Water is dripping behind the fridge or under it. Shut off the supply and see refrigerator leaking water.
- You would need to remove panels with the fridge plugged in.
- The freezer itself is failing.
Once it works again, regular cleaning keeps it that way; see ice maker maintenance. See also the U.S. Department of Energy’s Guide to Kitchen Appliances.
If you would rather have it looked at, book at /book/ or call (916) 582-7791 and ask for the next available window. The service call is $80, paid at your home or with PayPal or a credit card.
Common questions
Why is my ice maker making small or hollow cubes?
Usually low water flow: a partly closed supply valve, an old filter, or a restricted line.
How long does an ice maker take to make ice?
It varies by model, but a cycle often takes a few hours to fill the bin. Give it 24 hours after a reset before judging.
Can a frozen fill tube be fixed at home?
You can thaw it safely with the fridge unplugged. If it freezes again, the fill tube heater or the freezer temperature needs a technician.
Does a bad water filter stop the ice maker?
It can. A clogged filter restricts the flow to the ice maker even when the dispenser seems to work.
